London Interdisciplinary PhD Project 2026

This industrial collaborative (iCASE) PhD Project is offered via the BBSRC London Interdisciplinary Doctoral Training Programme (LIDo DTP), and it will provide the student with a unique opportunity to pursue innovative interdisciplinary research projects in the heart of one of the world's most vibrant cities.

This PhD project will apply a multidisciplinary approach to investigate the interplay between gut microbiota, farm environments, and zoonotic pathogen risk in pigs.

Objectives:

  1. Characterize the gut microbiomes of high- and low-performing pigs in relation to health status and susceptibility to zoonotic colonization.
  2. Assess how environmental parameters (e.g. hygiene, housing, temperature) influence pig health and pathogen susceptibility.
  3. Apply integrative multi-omics (metagenomics and metabolomics), alongside animal and farm metadata, to investigate Aims 1 and 2.
