Following the success of SOAS's recent study day in Mongolian Studies and looking to the growing strength of this scholarly field worldwide, the School of Arts invites applications for a postgraduate taught scholarship in the art history and/or archaeology of Mongolia, including the Mongol Empire.

The competition is open to any offer holder of a master’s degree programme in the Department of History of Art and Archaeology who qualifies for UK Home fees and will begin their MA programme either full- or part-time in the 2025/26 session.

Eligibility Criteria for Mongolian art and archaeology award at School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) 2025

Eligible programmes
  1. Any taught master’s degree in the Department of History of Art and Archaeology beginning in the 2025/26 academic year with a focus on Mongolian art and archaeology.
  2. Online Learning programmes are not eligible.
  3. Pre-sessional courses and short courses are not eligible.

Candidate criteria

  1. This scholarship is open to Home fee status applicants only.
  2. New admissions only (programmes starting in 2025/26).
  3. Applicants must demonstrate a focus of study in the art history and/or archaeology of Mongolia, including the Mongol Empire.
  4. Preference may be given to applicants whose previous academic or professional experience aligns with the study of Mongolian art and archaeology.

Selection Process

  1. Candidates will be assessed based on their academic merit, personal statement and work experience by a Selection Panel.
  2. The assessment of your application will be based on the information provided in your scholarship application and in your online application for admission. The panel will review details such as degree results, personal statement and other relevant information.
  3. Candidates will need to have an unconditional offer for their programme by the time the Scholarship Panel meet.
  4. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
  5. The shortlisting and awarding period is expected to be completed by the end of August at the earliest. Successful candidates will be contacted first, and once all awards have been allocated, unsuccessful candidates will be notified.



Benefits of Mongolian art and archaeology award at School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) 2025

One award available commencing in 2025/26 which will cover full-time Home tuition fees in full. For part-time study over 2 or 3-years, this award will cover 2-years or 3-years of Home tuition fees respectively, subject to successful progression.

Applications should take the form of a concise statement of purpose and career plans, outlining how you meet the eligibility criteria and outlining how the award would impact your studies. Applications should not exceed 600 words and must be sent by email in PDF format to scholarships@soas.ac.uk by 14 August 2025.
