Sir William Hartley Scholarship 2025/2026

The Sir William Hartley Scholarship provides $60,000 in financial support to a female doctoral student studying full-time at a university in Europe. Funded by the University of Canterbury, the scholarship offers $20,000 per annum over three consecutive years, with preference given to candidates studying at the University of Cambridge, University of London, or University of Oxford.

Eligibility Criteria for Sir William Hartley Scholarship 2025/2026

Applicants must identify as female.

Normally applicants must either:

  1. have graduated with a degree from Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury; or
  2. be completing a programme for a degree that would qualify them, in the year of application for the scholarship, to graduate from Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

The scholarship is tenable by full-time students engaged in study for a research doctoral degree at a university in Europe. Preference is given to those who will be studying at the University of Cambridge, the University of London, or the University of Oxford.

Selection will be based on:

a. academic achievement; and

b. likelihood of success in chosen research.

Normally, there may be only one holder at a time, however, if funds become available because of late commencement of scholarship tenure by a recipient, applications may be opened to allow simultaneous tenure by another student.
