The VU Fellowship Programme (VUFP) is a merit-based tuition fee waiver. It can be combined with the NL Scholarship, meant as a contribution towards costs of living. They are both meant for students from non-EU/EEA countries who pay higher tuition fees.

Eligibility Criteria for Vrije University Fellowship Program (VUFP) 2026

  1. You hold a non- EU/ EEA passport and you are not eligible for the lower tuition fee.
  2. You do not have the Dutch nationality.
  3. You can prove your academic excellence (GPA equivalent to a Dutch 8).
  4. You are conditionally or unconditionally admitted to the first year of a full-time English-taught Master’s programme at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam starting per September 2026. Please note that:
  5. students starting in February cannot apply,
  6. joint programmes where VU Amsterdam does not administer the admission process are excluded from VUFP.
  7. The degree with which you are seeking admission has not been obtained in the Netherlands.
  8. You do not need to complete a preparatory programme before the start of your Master.

Benefits of Vrije University Fellowship Program (VUFP) 2026

  1. Full tuition fee coverage for the duration of the program
  2. Opportunity to apply for the NL Scholarship (formerly HSP) without any separate application, offering an additional €5,000 or €10,000 towards living expenses.
  3. VUFP is extended to the second year for two-year programs if 100% of ECTS from the first year.
  4. The NL Scholarship is only available for the first year of your degree.
  5. Even if enrolled in a two-year program, you will not be eligible for the NL Scholarship in your second year.
  6. There are a total of 20 to 25 NL Scholarships.
  7. Only a few VUFP recipients will be eligible for the NL Scholarship.
  8. The VUFP scholarship is available for a one-year or two-year Master's program. If 100% of the ECTS from the first year is obtained, the scholarship will be extended for the second year of a two-year Master's program.
