He grew up in the southern suburbs, was awarded the state English award when he graduated from high school, attended Yale University as a Yale National Scholar until illness forced his withdrawal, and was graduate from Roosevelt University with its Phelan Fellowship for graduate study. His literary interest focused on critic and poetry; he was also a talented pianist and a Chicago Cubs fan. David died in 1972 at the age of 24; his parents endowed this scholarship in his honor.
