The Jack Webster Foundation is pleased to offer student journalism awards in order to foster the next generation of journalists in the province of British Columbia. Applications are accepted and students can apply each year in September. Applications are now being accepted. Apply before the deadline of Sunday, Oct 5th at 11:59pm.

Eligibility Criteria for Jack Webster Foundation Student Journalism Awards 2025

  1. An eligible applicant is a student who is enrolled in any year of a post-secondary journalism program at one of B.C.’s journalism schools.
  2. Eligible journalism programs: British Columbia Institute of Technology, Langara College, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Thompson Rivers University, University of British Columbia.
  3. To be considered, a student must be attending the current fall term and must be either a full or part-time student.
  4. A student is also eligible if they already hold a postsecondary degree and is in one of the above programs.
  5. One award will be given to a B.C.-born journalism student but there are numerous awards for those born outside of B.C.
  6. To be considered for an Indigenous Student award, students must identify as Indigenous. See the Indigenous Student application form.

Benefits of Jack Webster Foundation Student Journalism Awards 2025

One $2,000 award is available to a worthy recipient from each of the following journalism programs in British Columbia:

  1. BCIT
  2. KPU
  3. Langara
  4. TRU
  5. UBC.

Additional student awards of $2,000 are also available for any worthy student from any of the 5, above-listed post-secondary institutions.

Fill out the online application. You will be asked for the following information:

  1. First Name
  2. Last Name
  3. Phone Number/Email
  4. Are you a full-time student? Yes or No?
  5. Name of educational institution
  6. Expected graduation year
  7. Upload just one reference letter from someone who explains why they think you should receive this award, including their name, email, phone number
  8. Upload two pieces of journalism (published or not) that you have written/created—print/audio/video accepted, audio and video to be no more than 30 minutes each
  9. Upload your resume
  10. Opportunity to share additional information regarding challenges/obstacles you face that receiving this award would mitigate
  11. Upload an essay of not more than 500 words addressing the following questions, not necessarily in this order:
  12. What made you choose journalism as a career path?
  13. Where do you hope it will lead you?
  14. Which journalist’s work do you most admire and why?
  15. Without exceeding the word count, feel free to weave in additional points that will demonstrate to the judges your suitability for this award.
  16. The Indigenous Student Award application form is slightly different from the one referenced above.
