The Steve Ashton Scholarship for the Architectural Profession (SASAP) honours Steve Ashton, co-founder of Ashton Raggatt McDougall (ARM Architecture).

As a career architect, Steve undertook a Graduate Diploma of Business Administration at Swinburne to upskill with what he needed to help operate his business at a high-level and work on prominent urban design projects of the highest architectural quality.

In honour of Steve, the Ashton-Nixon Bequest seeks to support career architects taking the next leap in their professional development and pursue the business training they need to achieve their goals.

The scholarship will support eligible students each year studying either a Vocational Education or Postgraduate level qualification in an aligned business and/or management specialisation at Swinburne.

Eligibility Criteria for Steve Ashton Scholarship (SASAP) 2026

To be eligible for the Steve Ashton Scholarship for the Architectural Profession (SASAP) applicants must:

  1. Meet the following criteria:
  2. Australian, New Zealand citizen, Permanent Resident or International Student
  3. completed an accredited course in Architecture (provide a copy of your testamur or academic transcript)
  4. Meet the following enrolment criteria:
  5. be a Swinburne student in 2026
  6. enrolled full-time or part-time in an eligible course (see courses eligible in section above)
  7. enrolled on campus or online
  8. Submit a written statement or short video (no more than 2 minutes) addressing the following points:
  9. professional achievements to date
  10. any contribution to the architectural community
  11. examples of leadership
  12. how you would utilise this scholarship to help create a better world.
  13. Upload your video to cloud based storage (google drive/one drive/drop box) and provide the link in a MS Word or PDF document. Ensure the video is downloadable by anyone and not access restricted.
  14. Provide a copy of your curriculum vitae (max. 2 pages)
  15. Membership of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) would be well regarded, but is not essential.


Benefits of Steve Ashton Scholarship (SASAP) 2026

The scholarship is worth up to $30,000 per annum for full-time enrolled recipients for the standard full-time duration of the program, and up to $15,000 per annum for part-time enrolled recipients for the standard part-time. Payments will be made bi-annually.

  1. Diploma level students are eligible to receive up to $10,000
  2. Graduate Certificate level students are eligible to receive up to $15,000
  3. Graduate Diploma level students are eligible to receive up to $22,500
  4. Masters by coursework students are eligible to receive up to $30,000
