Mr Peacocke was born in 1911, and as a young man, worked in the Wheatbelt region before enlisting in the Australian Imperial Forces. Alan later moved from Perth to Tasmania for the cooler climate and worked at the Repatriation Department (now the Department of Veteran Affairs) for 30 years. Alan was well known for his passion for gardening and both he and his father shared an admiration for the writings of Sir Walter Murdoch so when he inherited his sister’s estate, he was inspired to support Murdoch students and research.

Eligibility Criteria for Alan and Iris Peacocke Research Scholarship 2025

The applicant must:

  1. Meet Murdoch University Admission requirements
  2. Be an Australian citizen
  3. Must be enrolled in first year of a Doctoral Research Program at Murdoch University Please note:
  4. The scholar is permitted to undertake no more than 180 hours of employment a year.
  5. The scholar must participate in activities to promote the Peacocke Research Foundation and their research.
  6. On award, this scholarship cannot be transferred to studies at another university or a field of research outside those listed above. Students must provide at least two weeks’ notice if they intend to vary their enrolment.

Required Documents

Once received the awardee will be required to update the scholarship provider:

  1. Thank you letter to the donor upon receipt of the Scholarship, outlining your research project and how the scholarship will help you.
  2. As part of the student’s compulsory annual report to the Research & Innovation Support Office via IRMA, the student should submit a 1- page report on progress, including an account of how the scholarship was spent and a projection of the expenditure for the following year. Reports should be signed by the student and a supervisor and submitted on the 12-month anniversary annually.

The report will also be submitted to the Peacocke Research Foundation Advisory Committee and payment of the next scholarship instalment will be dependent on good progress being made.

Payment Method

The scholarship will be paid on confirmation of candidature in annual instalments throughout the PhD and be made up of: $15,000 year one $15,000 year two $15,000 year three $7,500 year four - possibility for a 6-month extension where the research has been delayed due to circumstances beyond the student’s control and related to the research rather than a personal one.

Project costs paid into research account to be made up of: $10,000 year one $10,000 year two $10,000 year three


Benefits of Alan and Iris Peacocke Research Scholarship 2025

Annual stipend ($15,000 per year for 3 years + $7,500 in year 4) and research funding ($10,000 per year for 3 years); possible 6-month extension.

  1. A one-to-two page CV including name, contact details and nationality as well as details of undergraduate studies (including academic transcript), employment, extracurricular interests, and a statement outlining your goals and aspirations.
  2. Up to one page outline of doctoral research project and how it fits with the scope and values of the Alan and Iris Peacocke Research Scholarship.
  3. Annual budget estimate for research costs
  4. A brief reference from your proposed supervisor.
  5. List any existing funding (including from external sources) that you have secured or have applied for in relation to your research.
