Cardiff University Fully Funded PhD in Electrochemistry 2026

Applications are currently open for this fully funded PhD project, which focuses on "ELECTROCHEMISTRY AT NEURAL INTERFACES: optimization of peptide-nanocellulose neural-electrode interfaces for energy-efficient neuromodulation—Competitive EPSRC funded post."

This PhD aims to develop next-generation neural electrodes that are efficient, sustainable, tunable, and biologically compatible, demonstrating an optimized bioelectrode interface that reduces energy demand for neuromodulation. You will design and fabricate peptide-functionalized nanocellulose hydrogels and thin films, engineer and optimize their redox/ionic conduction properties, and electrodeposit them onto model electrodes. You will systematically probe how optimized composition and structure control:

  1. charge injection and storage capacity
  2. interfacial impedance and stability under clinically relevant pulse trains
  3. redox- and spin-active intermediates and defects at the electrode–electrolyte interface.

Summary

  1. Application Deadline: 09 January 2026
  2. Value: Tuition + £20,780 annual stipend + £4,000 research support (3.5 years)
  3. Study Level: PhD
  4. Sponsor: Cardiff University
  5. Course to study: Chemistry / Bioelectronics (Neural Electrode Design)
  6. Eligible Country: All Countries
